English 9
The study of grammar, literary techniques and forms; practice in written composition, oral English and reading comprehension; vocabulary building; library and research skills.


English 10
Development of reading, writing and critical thinking skills; refinement of grammar; study of American literature including drama, short stories, non-fiction, poetry; beginning SAT preparation with vocabulary building and reading comprehension components; research and library skills.


English 11
Comprehensive review of grammar and language usage; intensive vocabulary study; practice in expository writing and literary critique; SAT and Regents Examination preparation; development of public speaking skills; and a survey of major English literary works. 


English 12: World Literature (first semester for each English 12)
A study of several masterpieces of world literature from ancient to modern times, as well as practice in expository writing and public speaking skills; research and library skills. 


English 12:  Sports and American Literature (one semester)
An exploration of how American literature and sports have affected one another.  Diverse American icons such John Updike, H.L. Mencken, Damon Runyun, Norman Rockwell and John Wooden will be highlighted.  Tours of NYC sports meccas, such as Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden are planned. 


English 12: Drama (one semester)
A study of the great works of world theater from Ancient Greece to modern times.  Students will have an opportunity to work with professional actors and directors and to attend live theater.  Students will write, direct and act in their own productions. 


English 12: Film (one semester)

A study of European and American films and trends in the film industry with a focus on film as the “new” literature.

English 12: Media (one semester)

A critical study of television, radio, music advertising, film and the print media and their effects on our society; learn what goes on “behind the scenes.” 


English 12: College Writing (one semester)

This course will take the student beyond the Regents essay format and into the process of writing on the college level. The course will recognize that writing is a process involving a number of elements including collecting information and formulating ideas, determining their relationships, drafting, arranging, building, and revising.

 

Advanced Placement English (two semesters)

This is a college level study of the great writers with a focus on authors’ styles and student development of appreciating content and form. The course culminates with the AP English exam.

 

Journalism/Creative Writing (two semesters) - elective

The first semester includes a study of journalistic styles and the business procedures of newspaper production. The second semester includes writing creatively in different genres. Students write original poems, short stories, drama and personal essays.
